Yorkshire Silent Film Festival returns for its third edition this week with exciting events across Yorkshire from 8 May. YSFF takes its inspiration from the early days of silent cinema, when films had no recorded sound but were far from quiet, featuring pianists and orchestras, singers and actors, and gramophone records.
City Varieties host the festival’s opening gala, with Paul Merton presenting his Silent Clowns show celebrating classic early slapstick with Neil Brand on piano. Other highlights include the 1922 version of Oliver Twist with a live orchestra, and Andy Warhol’s legendary experimental film Empire with a new score by Monty Adkins.
