Sheffield documentary selected as sole UK film in international non-fiction competition
Sheffield-based independent filmmaker Vineet Shukla’s 50-minute documentary Reyt Repair: A Sheffield Story has been selected for the Main Non-Fiction Film Competition at the 32nd Minsk International Film Festival Listapad.
The current competition programme contains 16 international documentaries, with Reyt Repair: A Sheffield Story, the only UK film in the competition. The documentary will receive its competition cinema screening in Minsk on 3 November at 16:30.
Filmed inside Sheffield social enterprise Reyt Repair, the observational documentary follows the craftspeople and volunteers who give broken objects another life.
From everyday electrical items to unusual restoration projects, the film looks beyond the objects themselves to explore repair culture, practical knowledge, sustainability, purpose, dignity and the community that has developed around the workshop.
Shukla researched, directed, shot, and edited the documentary independently with limited equipment and an estimated production budget of approximately £500.
The film follows Shukla’s earlier Sheffield documentaries No Place Like Home and A Mile of Silence: The £5 Secret.
No Place Like Home, developed during Shukla’s MA Digital Media Management at Sheffield Hallam University, won an award from the Knowmad Institut of Human Rights in Germany and subsequently received international festival and academic screenings.
A Mile of Silence continued Shukla’s investigative interest in migration, student labor and workplace exploitation and was selected for Jagran Film Festival 2026.
With Reyt Repair, the focus turns towards sustainability, community action, and the dignity of practical work.
Shukla said:
“Seeing a small Sheffield documentary made with very limited resources enter an international main competition is significant to me, but the film really belongs to the people at Reyt Repair who trusted me to document their workshop and community.”
